The density problem

Operations software has a density problem. The users — dispatchers, ops managers, planners — deal with hundreds of data points simultaneously. A consumer designer's instinct is to simplify, remove, declutter. In enterprise ops tooling, that instinct will get you in trouble.

Your users are experts. They've spent years building mental models around the data they work with. If you remove something they rely on "because it looks cleaner," you've just made their job harder.

The real design challenge isn't reduction. It's hierarchy — helping users find what matters right now, without losing access to what matters next.

Write about what you actually learned. Some questions to prompt you:

  • What assumption did you bring into this domain that turned out to be wrong?
  • What did ops/logistics users care about that surprised you?
  • What's one decision you made early in your career here that you'd change now?
  • What do designers miss when they first start working in enterprise or B2B?
